1971 Summer 2049 Queen St East Christina's Christening

Summer 1971

It is the end of a chapter and the beginning of a new one. Brendon was born on
May 10,197 1, and this summer he is initiation in the camping. He sleeps in his carriage under the pine tree-- a happy baby.
If he takes after his father, he will be an outdoor type. John loves the outdoors—swimming, sailing, tennis, water-- sports of all kinds.
On July 27, 1971 Christina was born. Five days later she was sleeping under the pines at the Point.
All the summer-- although the weather was not good-- at every opportunity the carriages were parked under the pines while the barbeques blazed and the water skiers took off and raced.
"Teen Bay" was not used as much now since the raft and diving board were removed and the rope no longer dangled from the "Chicken Tree."

August 1971 Christina's Christening Day

I want to wrap this day tightly around me, and be warm with family and friends and love. Today was Christina's christening day.
Jimmy and Sue drove back from Espanola. They had driven down from here yesterday to attend a wedding. Mary and Jim brought the family in from camp, so we were all together and I can't believe how lucky we are. The ages ranged from ninety-one years to one month. Christina was one month and Brendon, 3 1/2 months. Nora was almost eight. There was one great-grandmother; two grandfathers; two grandmothers; a great aunt and uncle (in their mid-forties); brothers and sisters; first cousins and second cousins; in-laws, too.

We are so blessed. Young Father Amadio was sincere and reverent, and also with great humor. There were three other babies to be Christened twin girls, and a boy who was Filipino.
Brendon broke up the whole gathering with one of his loud BRACK BURPS, during a lull in the ceremony.  Nineteen of us gathered together to have Christna become a Christian.
Then we all went back to our house at McDougall Street so that Great-grandmother would be included in the festivities. We had cocktails (Daiquiris for the gals) and then go to the Olsen compound. We went to Joel and Suzanne's house, then next door to Sidney and Helen's. Helen had a lovely buffet meal. I wish I could record the detail of such food.
John caught Mary Jane smoking. He has never smoked and just cannot understand why Mary Jane wants to smoke. He absolutely forbids it, but Mary Jane sneaks to do it. He knows that she is doing it, and it bugs him. "Nothing," he says. "Bugs me so much. If only I could think of something that would bug her as much as that bugs me!"He stared reflectively into space. "I suppose I could walk into her birthday party stark naked! Mary Jane reminded him that he had practically done it the other day when he bent double and he split his bathing suit."Yeah," he said. "I guess I blew that idea."

Sidney summed up his situation. "You know", he said to Mary. "When Joel told us that he was going to get married, Helen and I decided that when he left we would tear down the little house beside us. You know what happened! Joel and Suzanne remodeled the little house, and WE end up with nineteen for dinner!"
